Marshel B. Powell was born in Kenna, New Mexico on August 26, 1921 to Lushen and Ida Powell. He was 95 years old when he passed away on February 3, 2017.
Marshel is survived by his wife Norma (71 years of marriage) and daughters Debra Mason of Torrance, CA and Lisa (Greg) Chavez of Lakewood, CA, brother Richard Powell, and grandchildren Jeffrey Powell, Dan (Bobbie) McBath, Jennifer Turner, Rodney (Bessie) Geilenfeldt, Todd (Shanan) Geilenfeldt, Timothy (Sara) Geilenfeldt, Bryan Howell, Dena (Cory) Sajulga, Joshua Toledo and Nicholas Chavez, as well as many great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughters Janice Redding and Cheryl Geilenfeldt, Grandson Jason Turner, and son-in-law Donald Mason.
Marshel served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. He was a Radio Operator/Aerial Gunner and flew in B-25 aircraft on 50 combat missions. He was later promoted to Tech Sergeant. Stationed in Corsica, France, he made several lifelong friends and acquaintances.
After his service in the military, that of which remained a great source of pride to him, he returned to Norman, OK where he married Norma Clark on October 23, 1945. They then moved to Torrance, CA where they spent most of the remaining years of their marriage.
He had worked at Harvey Aluminum and TRW before hiring on at Chevron Refinery in El Segundo as a Production Operator. He retired from Chevron in 1983.
Other than his time in the service, Marshel's greatest pride was his family. Those who were fortunate enough to be around this kind, gentle, and funny man – whether you were family or friends – will always cherish his memory.
Funeral services for Marshel will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Historic Church of Green Hills.
